Given how many different products that there are for the home, it is a wonder that people are not sick of it all, and just using one material for their cleaning. If you feel like you could do with a more universal method for cleaning the home, then you may be interested to look at the various properties of baking soda. As the cleaning market is more and more saturated by place specific cleaning products, the more likely you are to feel like you can’t clean certain areas unless you have a specified product for that room or surface. The fact is however, despite what they say on the tin, most of these cleaners are just simple soaps and detergent solutions. There is a less obvious, but equally powerful way to clean using a much more natural substance, baking soda, which is great if you want to ensure that you are getting the whole place looking great without having to pick up quite such a variety of cleaning products at the supermarket.

Baking soda is carbonated, and this essentially means that when in contact with water it gets pretty fizzy. The fizzing reaction with water will mean that the area that it is concentrated on will have a higher reaction rate, which will break down the dirt that you are tackling extremely effectively. This basically means that like heat, baking soda can speed up the cleaning process. Basically this means that you can really cook with gas if you use baking soda and hot water, which when ground up into a paste can form a fantastic cream style cleaner. Add a little lemon for acidity and fresh scent, and you will find that you have a multipurpose cleaning product that can deliver great cleaning throughout the home.

For an excellent fridge freshener, sprinkle baking soda throughout the fridge when you have finished cleaning it, the soda will soak up any leftover moisture, as well as any odors that may still be hanging in the air. If you want to ensure that your fridge stays odor free going forwards, then try halving a lemon, scooping out the insides, and filling the rind with baking soda. You will find that the lemon gives a nice scent, whilst the baking soda carries on absorbing any unpleasant odors, which will mean that you never get that cheesy fridge smell again!

This technique works well for smokers and pet owners who hate the way that such smells get in to the carpets and upholstery. A sprinkle of baking soda over the carpet and furniture, left over night will soak up much of the smells that you want to get rid of. If you then vacuum it up the next day, you won’t have to worry about the white dust getting all over you when you sit down!

If you have stains in clothing, then mix soda with a little water and apply it for an hour – this will help to shift the stain. If you allow it to get partly dry and then reapply it, you will have the best chance of getting rid of the stain whilst also preventing the that is left over from drying out completely and setting in to the fabric, which can be a nightmare! Be sure to remove the baking soda properly by washing after with cool water, and rinsing thoroughly, as otherwise it can leave white residue!
