Step 1: Come up with a route
First of all, it’s very important to know what to clean first and in which order to make your cleaning faster. As a general rule, the spiral technique is proven to work best – you should start from the outside and then work your way into the house. If you’re living in an apartment, your starting point will be the balcony (if there’s one) and then walls and ceiling. Then comes cleaning your furniture and, in the end, floors. Some experts suggest repeating the whole thing the next day because you will almost certainly discover a missed spot, so doing it twice might be the safest way to get it done properly.
Step 2: Walls and ceiling
There are two ways you can clean the walls and it depends on whether they have been freshly painted or not. If you’ve put on a fresh coat of paint during your remodel then do no more than dry dusting – it will be enough to get them clean without damaging the paint. On the other hand, if your walls haven’t been refreshed in a while, cleaning them with a damp cloth is your best choice. You can do it by hand or wrap a cloth around a broom or duster to reach the unreachable. There are plenty of solutions for cleaning the walls, so choose yours and get to scrubbing.
Step 3: The furniture
This might be the trickiest part because it includes cleaning every place where dust and debris could’ve gotten on. This is especially true for pieces that are near the ceiling, such as light fixtures, fans and tops of the shelves. If your remodelling project was bigger, chances are you covered your furniture, which was definitively a good call. However, dust always finds its way so cleaning everything thoroughly is a must. Again, a vacuum cleaner and a damp cloth should be your best allies. However, this part of the cleaning can take a lot of time, so hiring professional cleaners might be a smart thing to do. They can perform comprehensive house cleaning, taking care of everything from bathrooms to garages, so you can rest assured that your entire home will be spotlessly clean after they are done.
Step 4: The floors
After cleaning everything else, your floors might look shockingly dirty and that’s exactly why cleaning experts suggest saving them for the end. It’s the centre of your cleaning route and, once you’ve cleaned everything else, you know you got all the dirt in one place. Cleaning it depends on the type of flooring you have. Carpeted surfaces require vacuuming a few times and maybe even taking them to the professionals if they got really dirty. Hardwood floors, laminates, and tiles, on the other hand, need a good vacuuming then mopping and then vacuuming again. This is the correct order because you will always find more dirt in-between stages of cleaning.
Once you got these covered, make sure you inspect everything to be sure you haven’t missed a spot. As you can see, getting your home spotlessly clean after the renovation might be a huge job but the satisfaction you’ll get afterwards sure is enough to compensate. Just imagine – freshly renovated and spotlessly clean home – what a sight to wake up to the next morning.
