Are you one of those people who keep on skipping the guest room when painting the entire house? Don’t be. In most houses guest rooms are very small, so you can even use the paint leftovers from the rest of the house.
Just make sure that you find (or mix up) a soothing colour that will make it easier for the guest to relax and fall asleep. Some of the best colour palettes for the guest room are blue-white-beige, brown-purple, mellow yellow-green-white, and combination of creamy neutrals.
Add a Storage Unit
If the guests are staying for more than one day, they will probably want to store their stuff somewhere, instead of keeping their clothes on the bed, chair or leaving them in the bag. Sure, you don’t have to install a walk-in wardrobe, but anything from a small dresser to storage bins or baskets can do the trick. If you opt for the latter option, you can decorate bins and baskets with bows, chalkboard paint, or anything that will make them look more welcoming.
If you want to fit two guests in one room, it is always better to choose twin beds instead of a single full-sized one. Whatever you pick, you have to make sure that the guests won’t be complaining about back pain the next morning. No one expects you to spend your house budget on a new bed; you can leave the frame and get a quality mattress on sale. The bed should also look comfortable, so throw some soft pillows on top of it, and use them for both comfort and decor. You can style it up by making an improvised headboard.
A Nightstand
A nightstand by the bed is the main station for the guests’ basic necessities. Nightstands are usually quite affordable at furniture shops, but you don’t even have to spend a dime to have one. Just repurpose some other piece into it.
Take a small chair, for instance, give it a new coat of paint, put a vase with fresh flowers on top of it, and voila! You can even use a wine crate or an old suitcase to make creative and unique nightstands. Leave a stack of magazines or books to make the guests feel more welcomed. If you don’t have enough room on the stand for a lamp, consider installing a wall lamp just above the bed.
Make It Warm
You never know if your guests are extremely sensitive to cold or heat, so you should give them the chance to choose. Put extra blankets on the bottom of the bed, so they can decide whether or not they’ll use them. A soft shaggy area rug on both sides of the bed will provide the warm landing, but you should also leave a pair of comfy slippers for going to the bathroom or the kitchen. Colourful accents and alluring artwork will make the room feel more like home than a hotel. And to make it even more welcoming, leave a carafe of water on the stand.
Finally, your guests will be able to enjoy your welcoming home, and who knows, after they’re gone, you may even wish to keep the room for yourself!
