Stain the Concrete
If you are tired of your ordinary-looking concrete, you can refinish the surface and add to it some interesting texture. Staining the concrete can be a DIY project, if you have enough time and you’re handy at home improvement.
All you need to do is to prepare the surface with specially formulated cleaner or mechanic grinder and to apply the decorative stain. Since staining weakens the surface, you will need a quality sealer too.
Build a Low Wall
Building a low wall around the concrete surface will transform the space into a unique outdoor room and provide a quite different ambiance from a wide-open patio. The wall will act as a visual frame, giving you both privacy and a striking visual element. If you want a simpler way to create enclosure and privacy, try with trellis with vines.
Add an Overhead Structure
A pergola or some other overhead structure will change the space in a similar way like a wall. It will make the patio feel more private and comfy, and provide it with great shade. If you decide to install an overhead trellis with vines and ceiling fan, you will create a beautiful pattern of light too.
Use Coloured Concrete
If you are tired of the same old grey concrete, you can try with equally as durable, but much more appealing coloured concrete. Colour, besides the price, is the area where concrete excels compared to other patio materials, because it offers much more options. You can combine different shades or stick to one. Also, you can use different colours to mark different zones (e.g. entertaining, plants).
Lay an Outdoor Rug
Looking for a simple transformation that will take away as less time and money as possible? Well, there is no better solution than laying an outdoor rug. Be aware that the rug should be placed in a cover area, though. Note that man-made materials (polypropylene, nylon and polyester) tend to stand up better to the elements than natural ones, but if you prefer organic fabrics, you can opt for jute, sisal, bamboo or hemp.
Make an Entertaining Hub
What’s the use of a patio if you can’t enjoy it with friends and family? To adapt the space to socializing needs, you will need quality outdoor furniture (aluminium, plastic, steel, wicker, etc.), outdoor cooking area, barbeque and/or (sunken) fire pit, and proper lighting.
Introduce Container and Hanging Gardens
True, plants don’t grow on concrete, but you can make some room for them in your concrete jungle. Container gardening gives you the power to create a portable garden where you can control planting conditions. Greenery and flowers will surely inject some life into otherwise grey and monotonous concrete patio. One or two lush containers will be enough to spruce up the outdoor area, but you can complement them with colourful hanging planters on the walls.
At the first glance, concrete patios are rather boring sights. However, making some simple additions and rethinking the very design of the surface can help revive your backyard and create a more interesting and visually appealing outdoor living space.
